Job Description:

SUMMARY: The EH&S Specialist is responsible for providing the support and resources to drive the safety initiatives for all Live Operations (i.e. Farms; Feed Mills; Loadout Crews; ERM/Maintenance; Truck Wash; Warehouse). Responsible for assisting the Live Operations leadership team with safety compliance policies/procedures to ensure compliance with local, state and federal agencies with the primary emphasis on continuous improvement to effectively control incident and health exposures in the workplace.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned at management's discretion.

* Collaborate with the Operations Safety Manager to ensure management personnel have a working knowledge and understanding of OSHA regulations and standards to maintain a safe work environment.

* Monitor the behavior based safety program. Focus on employee involvement, safety performance, injury prevention, and root cause analysis.

* Assist the Operations Safety Manager to ensure all Live Operation safety policies/procedures and records are in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.

* Conduct safety audits for Live Operations and provide follow-up to ensure corrective action is identified and timely implemented.

* Drive timely completion of corrective action associated with near-miss incidents, incident investigations and root cause analysis.

* Deliver training to supervisors/managers on incident prevention and investigation of all near misses, injuries and Smith Driving(tm).

* Coordinate, and lead the discussions with the appropriate senior management and supervisory personnel on all near misses and recordable injuries via an Incident Review Board to ensure root cause is identified and corrective action is implemented timely.

* Present and review monthly safety performance statistics to senior management.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty/function satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in a safety or related field of study preferred; or a degree in an agriculture related field of study with at least 1-2 years of related work experience; or 3 -5 years of safety related work experience. Proven work history and successful track record of continuous improvement; developing policies/procedures; developing and delivering safety training to a wide audience and ability to "train-the-trainer"; OSHA, EPA knowledge.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Bi-lingual in both English and Spanish is preferred, but not required. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports, business correspondence, and procedural/training manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, managers, clients, customers and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally. Must be able to move from place to place to all areas of production. Must be able to climb ladders or platforms and wear a respirator. Must be able to wear all personal protective equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work environment includes a normal office environment as well as climate extremes found in the production operations. Incumbent is required to travel to remote facilities and/or field offices for training and meetings. Noise level varies upon which area of production employee is working in.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: The hours and days of work are established as needed by operations and at the discretion of management. Must be able to work a flexible schedule as necessary, to provide support for "on-call" responses to emergency calls for accidents. Must be able to travel to field operation locations up to 70%.
